A water softener removes hardness minerals — calcium and magnesium — that cause scale buildup in pipes, appliances, and fixtures. They solve different problems, and most homes need only one of them. If your water is hard AND has health-related contaminants, you may need both — but that is a minority of situations.

What Does a Water Filter Do?
A water filter physically or chemically removes contaminants from water. Depending on the filter type, it targets different things:
- Activated carbon filters remove chlorine, chloramine, VOCs, some PFAS, and improve taste and odor.

What Does a Water Softener Do?
A traditional salt-based water softener removes calcium and magnesium ions from water through a process called ion exchange — trading those minerals for sodium ions. The result is “soft” water that does not leave scale on fixtures, inside water heaters, or in dishwashers. Soft water also uses less soap and detergent, extends appliance life, and reduces the chalky residue on glasses and shower doors.
A water softener does not remove health-related contaminants like lead, PFAS, chlorine, or bacteria. It is an appliance-protection and comfort device, not a health device.
Salt-free “softeners” are not true softeners — they are water conditioners. They change the structure of calcium and magnesium so it does not adhere to surfaces, but they do not remove the minerals. Which One Do You Actually Need?
You Need a Water Filter If:
- Your water smells like chlorine or has an off taste (common in city water)
- You have lead concerns — older home, pre-1986 plumbing, lead service lines
- You are on well water with bacteria, iron, sulfur, or sediment
- You want PFAS or chemical contaminant removal
- Your tap water test shows elevated levels of any health-related contaminant
A water softener will not fix any of these. Chlorine, lead, and PFAS pass straight through a standard salt-based softener. If these are your concerns, you need a filter.
You Need a Water Softener If:
- Your water hardness test shows above 7 grains per gallon (gpg) or 120 mg/L
- You see white scale on faucets, showerheads, or inside your kettle
- Your water heater is losing efficiency (scale insulates the heating element)
- Glassware comes out of the dishwasher spotted or cloudy

A water filter will not soften your water. Removing hardness requires either ion exchange (salt-based softener) or a conditioner. Carbon filters, RO systems, and UV purifiers do not remove calcium and magnesium at whole-house scale.
Note: A reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap will remove hardness minerals from drinking water — but only from that tap, not the rest of your home.
You Need Both If:
Your water is hard AND has health contaminants. This applies most commonly to:
- Well water homes with hard water, iron, and bacteria
- City water homes in hard water regions that also have aging pipe infrastructure and lead risk
The typical setup for this situation is a whole-house softener followed by a whole-house filter (or a point-of-use RO system at the kitchen tap). The softener is installed first on the water supply, then the filter downstream.
How to Know What Your Water Actually Contains
Do not guess. A water test gives you the answer in 48–72 hours for $30–150 depending on the panel.
For city water: Your annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) — mailed to you or available on your utility’s website — lists all tested contaminants and their levels. It does not include lead at your tap, since lead enters after the utility’s testing point. For lead specifically, test at your tap.

What About Whole-House Filters That Do Both?
