Step-by-Step: Installing an Inline Under-Sink Filter

Step 1: Shut Off the Cold Water Supply

Under the sink, locate the cold water supply valve (right side if you’re facing the cabinet from inside). Turn it clockwise until it stops. Open the kitchen faucet to release pressure and drain the remaining water from the supply line. Place a bucket under the supply line to catch residual water.

Step 2: Disconnect and Tap the Cold Supply Line

The supply line runs from the shutoff valve up to the faucet. There are two common connection points:

Step 4: Connect the Tubing

Push-connect tubing (common in modern filter kits) inserts directly into the fitting with a simple push. To connect: push the tubing straight in until you feel a click. To disconnect: depress the collet ring and pull. No tools required.

Cut tubing cleanly with a tube cutter or sharp scissors — angled cuts cause leaks. Leave enough slack in the tubing run to open the housing for cartridge changes without disconnecting lines.

Route the inlet tubing from your tee fitting to the filter housing inlet (marked IN or with an arrow). Route the outlet tubing from the filter housing outlet back to the supply line port of the tee, or directly to the faucet supply line depending on your system.

Step 5: Restore Water and Check for Leaks

Turn the shutoff valve back on slowly. Check every connection point visually — look for drips at the tee fitting, at the housing cap, and at both ends of the tubing. Dry each joint with a towel first so you can see any new moisture appear.

Let the system run for 2 minutes to flush the new cartridge. Discard the first 2–3 gallons. Some carbon filters produce a grey-tinged flush during initial use — this is carbon fines and is harmless, but you don’t want it in your glass.


Step-by-Step: Additional Steps for Reverse Osmosis Systems

RO installation follows the same steps above, plus two additions.

Step A: Install the Dedicated Faucet

Check your sink for a spare knockout hole (a pre-formed hole plugged with a rubber stopper). Most kitchen sinks have at least one. If yours doesn’t, you’ll need to drill a 1-3/8-inch hole using a step bit or hole saw rated for the sink material. On stainless steel, use cutting oil and go slowly.

Mount the RO faucet through the hole, secure the nut underneath, and connect the faucet’s tubing to the RO system’s product water output line.

Step B: Connect the Drain Line

RO systems produce reject water (typically 2–4 gallons of reject per gallon of filtered water produced). This must drain continuously. A drain saddle clamps around the drain pipe under the sink — above the P-trap, below the sink basket.

Mark the drain pipe with a marker, clamp the saddle over the pipe, and drill through the saddle’s guide hole into the drain pipe using the included drill bit (usually 1/4 inch). Thread the drain line from the RO system into the saddle port. Do not install the drain saddle below the P-trap — wastewater can siphon back through the membrane.

Step C: Flush the RO Membrane

New RO membranes require a full tank flush before use. Fill and drain the storage tank (or for tankless systems, run the faucet for 10–15 minutes) twice before using the filtered water. This removes manufacturing preservatives from the membrane.


Common Installation Mistakes

Using a saddle valve instead of a tee fitting. Saddle valves are included in many kits for convenience but are the most common source of slow leaks over time. If your system includes a compression tee adapter, use it.

Over-tightening plastic fittings. Filter housings and fittings are often polypropylene or ABS plastic. Overtightening cracks the fitting threads. Firm hand-tight plus a quarter turn is enough on plastic.

Installing the drain saddle below the P-trap. Water from the P-trap can siphon through the drain line and contaminate the RO membrane. The saddle must go above the P-trap on the vertical or horizontal drain pipe.

Not flushing the new cartridge. Skipping the initial flush sends carbon fines into your drinking water. Run at least 2 gallons through before using filtered water.

Ignoring flow direction. Filter cartridges have an inlet and outlet. Water flowing the wrong direction bypasses the filter media. Check the housing diagram and tubing color codes (most manufacturers color-code: blue = inlet, red = drain, yellow = product).
