Best Water Filter for Los Angeles: What to Remove First

For most Los Angeles homes, the best water filter is a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink — or, at minimum, a whole-house carbon filter combined with under-sink carbon. LA tap water meets EPA legal limits, but it contains chloramine (not regular chlorine), elevated levels of chromium-6 in some supply areas, PFAS detections from imported Colorado River water, and is moderately hard. A standard Brita pitcher doesn’t address any of these issues adequately. An RO system does.

What’s in Los Angeles Tap Water?

LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) supplies approximately 85% of LA’s tap water, drawing from three sources: the Los Angeles Aqueduct (Eastern Sierra snowmelt), the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD, which imports from the Colorado River and Northern California via the State Water Project), and local groundwater from the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys.

Chloramine, not chlorine. LA switched from chlorine to chloramine disinfection in the 1990s. Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia. It’s more stable than chlorine, which is why utilities use it for large distribution systems — it persists further through pipes. The problem: chloramine is harder to remove than chlorine. Standard carbon pitcher filters reduce chloramine incompletely. KDF-55 media (used in many shower filters and some inline filters) reduces it but doesn’t eliminate it. Catalytic carbon — specifically catalytic activated carbon (CAC) — is the effective media for chloramine removal and is used in quality whole-house and under-sink systems.

Chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium). Chromium-6 has been detected in LA’s water supply, particularly in groundwater from the San Fernando Valley and water sourced from the Colorado River. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has flagged this repeatedly. California has the toughest chromium-6 standard in the US — a maximum contaminant level of 10 ppb — but many health advocates argue the safe level for long-term exposure is much lower. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). PFAS contamination has been detected in some MWD-sourced water and in LA Basin groundwater. This is high enough to cause scale buildup in appliances, spot marks on dishes, and dry skin and hair over time. An RO system removes hardness minerals at the kitchen tap. For whole-house hardness control, a water softener is the standard solution.

Lead from plumbing. LA’s distribution water tests well for lead at the utility level, but lead can leach from older home plumbing and fixtures. Homes built before 1986 may have lead solder in the plumbing; faucets and fixtures installed before 2014 may contain brass with elevated lead content. Lead exposure has no safe level for children — if your home is older, treat the drinking water tap as if lead is present.
